Healthy communities are a core aim of the San Diego County Promotores Coalition. Healthy communities are those with the expertise and knowledge to access health services and resources creating a community conducive to health. This year\u2019s conference focuses on the unification of Promotores and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in creating and maintaining healthy communities. How do we create healthy communities? Invest in Promotores and CHWs. Promotores and CHWs are effective in educating and linking community members to health resources and services. To create healthy communities we must create health systems that look beyond the clinic, reach individuals where they are in a way that is culturally competent to overcome barriers preventing communities from reaching their full health potential.<\/span><\/p>\n

Promotores, as the link between the community and health and social services, carry the potential to make changes that directly impact the community. Promotores know the health concerns of our communities and are the key to meaningful, intergenerational community engagement that generates resilience. In this workshop, participants will learn about efforts from promotores in northern San Diego County and how they have made systemic policy advances driven by community health. Participants will have the opportunity to form an effective PhotoVoice campaign plan that includes intergenerational promotores, community members and other stakeholders to prioritize and improve health for all.     Working on Social Determinants of Health: Core Competency for Promotores<\/td>\nPromotores are an asset to the community because they bring an understanding of the languages, cultures, and lived experiences from the communities they serve. Their skills provide a unique and impactful contribution towards efforts to improve health outcomes. There is extensive evidence indicating that promotores play an important role in improving community health. As health care landscape changes, there is an opportunity to improve community health by addressing the social conditions that impact people\u2019s health, often referred to as the social determinants of health (SDoH).     Health Prevention Strategies in the Community: Agents of Health<\/td>\nThis workshop covers best practices of Community Workshops for Health Promotion (TCPS) implemented through the Institute of the Secretariat of Health of Baja California in Mexico.  Participants will learn a variety of educational strategies aimed at people, families, groups and communities according to age, sex, life event and epidemiological situation, whose purpose is to contribute to the development of knowledge and skills at an individual level and collectively that preserve, protect and improve biopsychosocial health.     The Risk of Overuse and Misuse of Antibiotics<\/td>\nAntibiotic resistance is a growing global problem. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the main driving force behind this threat. Each year in the U.S., at least 2 million people get an antibiotic\u2010resistant infection, and at least 23,000 people die. Antibiotic resistance has the potential to affect people at any stage of life and from any socio\u2010economic background. There are currently several nationwide campaigns urging doctors to stop over-prescribing antibiotics. It is also important to engage community health champions, such as promotores, who can then share information with their communities and increase awareness of antibiotic resistance and proper antibiotic use.     Mental Health & Trauma-Informed Care for Migrant Populations<\/td>\nAlthough migration is a natural phenomenon, it is a complex process that involves not only crossing geographic borders but also crossing interpersonal, cultural and socioeconomic borders. Migration thus has deep physical and psychological impacts on individuals. Community leaders, community health workers, clinicians, and health centers in the field are working to provide integrated mental and behavioral health care using practices and language that are supportive of the patient\u2019s personal experiences and that address the complex social, cultural, economic, and justice factors that contribute to disease burden. This session will explore mental health along a continuum of care. It will provide an overview of the different stages of the migratory cycle, the psychological impact of migration, the specific stressors that migrants experience, Ulysses Syndrome, and the role of trauma\u2010informed care.     Living the 5210 Message \u2013 Making Healthy Habits Easy!<\/td>\nLet\u2019s make creating lifelong healthy habits easy! This workshop will focus on fostering a positive attitude toward change for a healthier lifestyle. It will educate participants on the 5210 healthy lifestyle message and provide strategies to easily incorporate and share the message as both role models and educators for the communities they serve. The 5210 message has been promoted by the Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista Well\u2010Being Center at both elementary and high schools through interactive workshops to increase physical activity, healthier eating, and reduce recreational screen time use.<\/td>\nEnglish<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Gratitude<\/td>\nBeing grateful is perhaps one of the most important ingredients to being happy. When we are grateful, even for the small things in life, the body, the mind, and the heart work in perfect harmony. This workshop will help you understand the importance of the connection that exists between gratitude and emotional health. Thankfulness contributes to the proper functioning of the brain by causing the brain to release large amounts of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps us continue cultivating gratitude, and serotonin, which is known as “the happiness hormone” and produces feelings of happiness. Learning to value what you have is an art that must be developed every day and in every moment. Learning to be thankful and to find the good things in life will benefit your emotional health.<\/td>\nSpanish<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Parenting Styles<\/td>\nHow many times has your life been affected by your emotional state? Generally, when a challenge arises in which you have to make a decision, it triggers a fight between the heart and the mind. Usually, in this fight, impulse always wins. That is, emotion ends up dominating, causing an aggressive reaction that can subsequently bring unpleasant consequences and regrets. This reaction then comes off of as revealing a poor control of emotions and an inability to understand and manage them It\u2019s usually because we do not stop and take the time to reflect on and understand what we are feeling and why we are feeling a certain way. As a result, we do not know the adequate way to channel them. We develop the ability to manage emotions throughout our life, but it begins with our nuclear family. In this workshop, we will examine the different styles of parenting used at home and how to use emotional intelligence to promote greater personal growth and development in each family member.                        <\/td>\nSpanish<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    It\u2019s Difficult Being a Woman<\/td>\nJoin me in this workshop to learn to recognize the symptoms of depression and talk about the impact of depression on us and our family. Together we will explore the events in our lives that have led us to become the person we are today. We will work together to learn to love ourselves for who we are and to give ourselves the time we deserve. Come to remember how beautiful you are and the number of virtues that you offer.     What is the Role of the Father and Mother in the Family?<\/td>\nDo you know how important of a role the father and mother have? Have you noticed that what you experienced during your childhood continues to be reflected in your current life? Before children reach 2 to 3 years of age, they are unable to distinguish between “I” and “the other.” Their concept of self is fused to their mother and they see the world through the feelings and emotions of their mother. We continuously project what we experience during our childhood onto our family and our current relationships. Our parents were once children too and often treat their children similarly to how they were treated as children. The mother gives us protection and allows us to integrate into the world and form connections with people. The father introduces us to reality and allows us to experience the outside world and become an individual.<\/td>\nEnglish<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
