The 2018 Adelante Conference, \u201cCelebrating Health for All,\u201d organized by the San Diego County Promotores Coalition was no exception. Over 230 guests participated from 39 agencies throughout San Diego, Imperial Valley, Arizona and Mexico. The San Diego County Promotores Coalition\u2019s Conference Planning Committee executed a wonderful agenda creating an inspiring and motivating experience and was made possible by our sponsors and partners: the National Rural Health Association, Be There San Diego\/County of Health and Human Services Agency, the California Department of Public Health &#8211; Environment health Investigations Branch and Care 1st\/Blue Shield Health Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 conference theme, \u201cCelebrating Health for All\u201d reflected the need for our diverse communities to unite and persevere through the turbulent political climate affecting US ALL. Furthermore, the theme highlighted the collective strength of our communities in advancing health equity.<\/p>\n<p>To start the event, Ms. Margarita Hoguin, Co-Chair of the San Diego County Promotores Coalition gave opening remarks and highlighted the agenda. Guests were also requested to answer the question, \u201dWhat does being a Promotora\/Community Health Worker mean to them?\u201d and leave a note on the wall throughout the day. Following Ms. Holguin, Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola presented, \u201cThe Psychosocial Impacts of Separating Children and Families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the morning plenary, guests attended two workshop sessions with various professional development and health topics to learn about their topics of choice while engaging in lively discussion. These topics included \u201cAdverse Childhood Experiences\u201d, \u201c\u00a1Adelante! Steps Toward Community Resilience and CHW Led Policy\u201d, \u201cEquipping Promotores to Address the Opioid Crisis in their Communities\u201d, \u201cIntrafamily Violence\u201d, \u201cTogether Against Cervical Cancer\u201d,\u201cLearn the ABC\u2019s of Your Cardiovascular Health!\u201d and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Annually, the San Diego County Promotores Coalition recognizes two exceptional individuals to receive the \u201cPromotor(a) of the Year\u201d and \u201cPromotor(a) of Excellence\u201d awards. The 2018 awardees were Eva Garcia from Promotoras Activas por Communidad for Promotora of the Year and Cecilia Guzman from the Consulate of Mexico in San Diego for Promotora of Excellence. The award recipients were selected from a large group of candidates, based on nominations submitted by community members, Promotores, and organization leaders.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch and awards, guests attended one of seven workshops designed to enhance their personal development. Topics included \u201cChanging our Way of Thinking\u201d, \u201cStress Management for a Happier and healthier Life\u201d, \u201cThe Art of Public Speaking\u201d and others.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, guests attended the afternoon plenary where Ms. Barbara Jimenez of the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services delivered her speech, \u201cLeading Well to Live Well.\u201d Following Ms. Jimenez, guests filled out a conference evaluation. The evaluations serve to provide the 2019 conference planning members better insight and to consistently improve the Adelante Promotores Conference. Also completed evaluations earned guests a raffle ticket for a variety of donations from local partners and donors.<\/p>\n<p>A special thank you to the following facilitators and organizations that provided workshops: Silvia Barrag\u00e1n (San Diego State University), Rosa Flores &amp; Herminia Ledesma (Vista Community Clinic), Julie St. John (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center), Hugo Ramirez (Vision y Compromiso), Karlolina Schantz &amp; Dianne Fragueiro (Office of Minority Health Resource Center), Sergio Rosas (Independent Facilitator), Abby Belleza-Teply &amp; Marisol Britt (2-1-1 San Diego), Hector Meza (Independent Facilitator), Elizabeth Terrazas (Alzheimer\u2019s Association), Mirna Diaz &amp; Jose Lopez (Juntos Contra Cancer), Karen Sales &amp; Alma Sandoval (San Ysidro Health), Monica Bauer (Anti-Defamation League), Yadira Medrano (Office of Binational Border Health), Jessica Newmyer (American Heart Association), Gloria Vazquez (Amigas Punto Com), Vivian Nieto (Amigas Punto Com), Maria Stacey (National Conflict Resolution Center), Irma McGraw (San Ysidro health), Margarita Santibanez (Office of Binational Border Health), Linda Naranjo (Disabilities Rights California) and Antolin Rodriguez (Promotor de Salud.)<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to all members of the San Diego County Promotores Coalition for all their effort and insights in organizing this event. Our gratitude also goes to everyone who volunteered in the planning, venue decoration, conference registration, and much more.
